"Where is your Antartica?" by Dimitris Voulgaris

Where is your Antarctica?

I thought you wanted to run away

I thought you needed to escape

I thought you longed for change

From this ugly fettered reality

You could have sat on an ice float

Shivering from the excitement and the cold

Drifting endlessly nowhere

Counting the stars that passed above

The whales which pushed beneath

And all of those forever seconds

That you were free from worry

Change is change is change

It’s something that you taught me,

Ice melts and freezes again

Seas turn to vapor then to rain

But you are more than mere runoff

Your residence is still the same

Still warm

Still grounded

Still so far from Antarctica

If you left to run

Why are your legs so still?
