"Binding Reality" by Sophie Ammerman
I find myself shackled by insecurity
It creeps in, grasping my shallow breath
And binds my hands while my thumbs scroll
Through the silent cracked smiles of others
Who often think the same things of themselves
that I do about my material soul
Photos gather individual truths
They often capture hidden shadows
Or truths that are too ugly to be told
Yet are displayed to the world
Either as a lie to oneself
Or as a revelation to an alternative reality
When the photo is taken, it freezes time
It encapsulates a moment never to be seen again
Yet humans, for examination, introspection, or otherwise fascination
Find joy in the ambiguity of photography
In its ability to both hide and reveal the truth
